Summer’s Over
Summer’s over, and with that, I’d like to shine the spotlight on the 2021 collaborative EP Summer’s Over by Jordana & TV Girl.
A bit on the nose, sure, but it makes for perfect autumnal listening, particularly September - the crisp, sharp air complemented by the sun beaming through microscopic splits between leaves, passerbys catching up, walking their dogs, nursing their coffees.
The title track’s strings have a distinct jangle to them, unique but assured, and the lyrics explore a summer romance bygone. It’s cosy, romantic, sweet like honey. Lo on the Hi-Way has a similar musical deposition, and its lyrics feature wordplay which is incredibly satisfying for those of us who appreciate a little juxtaposition.
Jump the Turnstile is a standout track, a personal favourite if you will - the instrumental is electronic and the synths replicate the sound of a turnstile jumping (who woulda guessed?) on some sort of electro record. There’s some spoken word littered throughout, which complements Jordana’s soft, layered vocals.
If you’re a fan of early Clairo (specifically Diary 001), then you’ll enjoy the lo-fi sounds of this EP, but specifically, Sweet to Dream.
Ordinary Day has a reggaeton vibe to it, the instrumental sounds rooted in the Caribbean, and Better in the Dark is the love-child of Summer’s Over and Jump the Turnstile - it’s also a fan favourite.
Get this on during your next crisp autumn walk, trust me.
