'It Can't Be Christmas' without Tom Grennan

On December 13th (2024), Amazon Music released their collaboration with Tom Grennan - adding to their growing catalogue of Christmas tracks released each year.

Grennan, beloved by the British public (as evident by his consistent appearance in the UK Top 40 since his debut album), is in his element during his performance of the track at the Rivoli Ballroom (London) for Amazon Music's City Sessions.

The stage at the Rivoli Ballroom was set up in a way reminiscent of Elvis' '68 Comeback Special (also referred to as the Christmas special), with Grennan's initials 'TG' mirroring Elvis' name in big, bright, red lights behind the act. Not to mention the outfit: Grennan wore the same white suit that 'The King' wore back in his heyday.

The track is intrinsically jazz-like with a touch of soul, featuring keys, trumpets, and backing vocals from two wonderful vocalists. Yet, Grennan's raspy vocals belted, entrenched in Elvis' signature rock & roll style.

Lyrically, the track appears to be a love letter to a lost love, yearning for their presence to make it feel like Christmas. Yet, one can't help but think, is this a love letter to Presley? The set is reminiscent of his '68 Comeback Special, a topic similar to his classic Christmas track 'Blue Christmas'? Regardless, Grennan produced a quality Christmas track, whilst it may not be a classic, it is well good.
